The New iPad: Retina Display, A5X Processor, LTE
The iPad 3 was announced at the Apple event today in San Francisco. It will feature a high definition ”Retina” display much like the iPhone. The Retina display has a resolution of 2048×1536, that is a pixel density of 264ppi, compared to the iPhone 4s’ 326ppi. The new display is also advertised with 44% higher colour saturation compared to previous iPads. Note that this is the highest resolution found on a tablet to date, even compared to the ASUS Transformer Prime. Existing applications will be upscaled to fit the new high resolution display. This HD display is powered by a new A5X processor with a quad core graphics processor.
With the HD display comes a new built-in iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording, auto-exposure, and auto-focus. With all these new components, the battery life will remains at a strong 10 hours on wifi, and 9 hours on a data connection.
The iPad 3 is the first Apple mobile device equipped with 4G data connectivity with an advertised download speed of up to 73 Mbps. Alongside LTE, the iPad 3 is also equipped with a world compatible 3G connection, meaning it can be used with data connection worldwide. It will be available to North American Carriers including AT&T, Verizon, Bell, Rogers, and Telus. Note that AT&T and Verizon will receive two different versions of the iPad 3 as their LTE data networks differ, this means they will not be compatible across these two networks.
The New iPad will be available on March 16th at the following prices (wifi models, 4G models are $129 extra):
- 16GB – $499
- 32GB – $599
- 64GB – $699
